Dr. Joel Ademisoye has advised President Muhammadu Buhari on how to curb the Boko Haram and banditry insurgencies in Nigeria. In his speech, he advised that the government needs to change the weapons and tactics of war against the insurgency in the regions of the north because it seems the heavy dependency and reliance on the traditional weapons of war is not effective. He advised Mr. President to introduce drones.

Dr. Ademisoye in his speech said “The use of drones by the Nigerian military to fight and expunge Boko Haram and banditry in the Northeast and Northwest Regions of Nigeria has become a weapon of necessity to win the war. A public disclosure: I am not a military man. But, I have a passion and an interest in seeing the war end during the tenure of President Buhari.”

Read about the military capacity, capability, and success of the Turkish drone Bayraktar TB2 in eastern Ukraine. Isabelle Khurshudyan and David L. Stern, “Ukraine’s drone is a flash point with Russia,” The Washington Post, January 16, 2022, PA1 & PA18. I think the use of Turkish drones in the war could help to bring it to an end quickly.

I believe the Buhari administration needs to change the weapons and tactics of war against the insurgency in the regions of the north because it seems the heavy dependency and reliance on the traditional weapons of war like fighters or bombers are deemed less effective and efficient, particularly in avoiding the heavy casualties of the civilian population in the war zone.

The use of drones is becoming more popular in many countries because of their precision and accuracy on targets during operations.

Why is the Nigerian military still bent on the use of more expensive acquisitions of weapons like the SEPECAT Jaguar Fighters? Also recently, the U.S. Department of Defense delivered to Nigeria some A-29 Super Tucano aircraft. It seems that many countries are turning to the acquisition and use of drones as a new choice of weapons to fight their wars.

To defeat the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest regions, I believe a paradigm shift in military strategy, weapon types, and manpower development is required. It would be a great legacy for President Buhari to crush the Boko Haram insurgency before he leaves office in 2023 Dr. Ademisoye said
