By People’s Voice Nigeria | News
The Deputy Registrar and Ikeja Zonal Coordinator of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr. Amos Dangut, has advised supervisors against condoning any act of examination misconduct during the upcoming 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Lagos.
Dr. Dangut gave the advice during his opening remark at this year’s WAEC Briefings of Supervisors at the Government Secondary School Agege on Friday, April 28, 2023.
According to him, the government at every level and security agents are working assiduously with WAEC to nip in the bud the scourge of exam malpractice while also admonishing stakeholders in attendance to uphold the policy thrust of the examination body, adding that on no account should they drop their guard.
He also commended the National Office of WAEC (Nigeria), especially the HNO, Mr. Patrick Areghan, for the deployment of relevant technology to put the menace of exam malpractice to a halt and create a better future for Nigerian youths.
The workshop, which was moderated by Mustapha Momoh, was expected to have 293 participants in attendance but had 286 participants at the end of the interactive session.
Veracitydesk.com.ng gathered that the four-day program, which started on Wednesday, April 26, and continued on April 27 and 28, according to the organizers, will come to a climax on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
On his part, WAEC Head of Exams Administration and Senior Assistant Registra, Mr. Adedayo Simeon, who briefed the supervisors at the workshop, noted that the use of CIVAPEMS devices for capturing of the attendance of candidates is very important and must always be activated.
He equally informed the supervisors on their roles, which are to conduct examinations on behalf of the Council, following certain guidelines as stipulated by WAEC, and that the integrity of the exams must not be compromised, whether consciously or subconsciously.
“It is your duty to ensure that candidates write their names and examination number on top of their question paper in order to check malpractice. You are also expected to indicate start and stop times on the board. The council also wants you to move around the exam arena to check attendance with CIVAPEMS and mark sheets. Also check the candidates’ identities using the photo album. This is very important.”
“No supervisor should forget to report for duty on the first day of the exam, whether your center has an exam or not. Also endeavor to put a call in to the Deputy Registra/Zonal Coordinator, Senior Assistant Registra Admin, Assistant Registra Exams Security, or the Police if the situation calls for it. However, you should ensure that you speak to your custodian first before making such a decision. Please, we really need to be guided about this.”
“Also note with every sense of seriousness that no invigilator should be given any copy of the question paper.” Candidates should check their registration details for errors, which must be reported to WAEC promptly through the school authority for amendment at waeckonnect.com or https://request.waec.ng. Adedayo said.
The Senior Assistant Registrar also advised supervisors to educate their students on the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the school exam and teachers (invigilators) not to bring in GSM phones into the exam hall and to stay within the roles guiding the invigilation of the examination.
Also in attendance were the Head of Exams Security in Ikeja Zone, an Assistant Registra, Mrs. Obiakor Ann Agusta, and the Assistant Chief Exams Officer (Entries Session), Mr. Ernest Emelobi. They thanked WAEC for organizing the workshop and took turns admonishing participants on the need to follow the rules and regulations as rolled out by WAEC and conduct a malpractice-free examination in Lagos.
The workshop was concluded with information on some innovations introduced by the Council, such as WAEC Chatbox, the platform for gaining access to WAEC services online in real-time through www.request.waec.org, and WAEC Verify, which provides online access to tertiary institutions and other establishments to the WAEC database for the verification of prospective students’ or applicants’ results.
Others include EDUSTAT, which enables interested stakeholders to access WAEC statistics online; the Computer-Based Test Series, which offers reliable and robust CBT and Aptitude Test Services, WAEC digital certificate, etc.
The participants resolved to work together to ensure the successful conduct of the 2023 school exam in Lagos.
