APCOM TAKING COMMUNITY MEDIA TO ANOTHER HEIGHT IN LAGOS STATE

The benefits of community media in amplifying access to information and strategic communication in our various communities cannot be over-emphasized. It helps in informing the grassroots about recent happenings in and around their communities, particularly government activities. Information remains an inalienable lifeline of human society.

In his press statement, Abayomi Adejumo, the National President of APCOM, says, “It’s unfortunate that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration in Lagos State did not take good advantage of community media platforms in Lagos State to cascade information about its successes in Lagos State.” The previous administration had a very robust and mutually-benefiting relationship with the Association of Practitioners of Community Media (APCOM).

The gap between Community Media Practitioners and the Lagos State Government was obvious during the last Governorship election in Lagos State. As the communities had little or no information about the successes of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in Lagos State, Most of the news and information about the laudable people-oriented programs, projects, and policies of Governor Sanwo-Olu were never disseminated to publishers of Community Newspapers, Online programs, Radio and TV programs in Lagos State.

The newly elected Abayomi Adejumo-led executives of APCOM are ready to close the gap between the Lagos State Government and it’s association. This will enable effective dissemination of information about the programs, projects, and policies of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration. The victory of Governor Sanwo-Olu still centers around the spontaneous activation of Community Media platforms to tell the stories of his success in the last four years.

To further tilt the gulf between the Lagos State Government and Community Media Practitioners. We would like to appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to expediently reopen the Office of Communities and Communication under the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He should appoint a seasoned Community Media Practitioner to manage the office. This department will go a long way in disseminating accurate and unbiased information about the activities of the Lagos State Government at the grassroots.

We are open to collaborations that will bring about the rising of a new Lagos State that will be mutually beneficial to all and sundry.
