Rite Foods Limited, a prominent player in the food and beverage industry, and Popbeach Club have announced the launch of the 2024 ‘Riteonthebeach’ Festival. The event began with a Symposium aimed at students from tertiary institutions in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Law, to highlight the importance of ecological preservation. The symposium took place in Lagos on Monday, 11th November 2024.

Now in its fourth year, the ‘Riteonthebeach’ Festival also marks the start of the ‘Riteonthebeach’ Residency programme. This initiative focuses on realizing the value of plastic waste, enhancing environmental quality, and promoting human development through scientifically gathered data. It aims to underscore the critical importance of preserving the Lagos Western Peninsula and its adjacent mangrove forests.

The collaboration between Rite Foods and Popbeach Club, a Lagos-based eco-resort, is designed to tackle ocean plastic pollution, boost literacy, and create job opportunities. By facilitating the exchange of waste plastic for recycling and providing educational scholarships to children in coastal communities, the initiative addresses multiple societal needs.

Dennis Aideloje, Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Manager at Rite Foods Limited, who represented Ekuma Eze, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability, commented, “Riteonthebeach embodies our commitment to sustainable solutions for the plastic waste problem and empowers young Nigerians with the skills and insights needed to address climate change.”

Aideloje emphasized the urgency of dealing with Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles that pollute beaches and waterways. He added, “Through the ‘Riteonthebeach’ Symposium, we hope to inspire participants to take proactive steps in eliminating plastics from our coastlines.”

Akin Disu, Founder of Popbeach Club, highlighted the goals of the new project, which include removing plastics, processing them onsite into plastic pellets, and using blockchain technology for transparency. “By leveraging technology and data, ‘Rite On The Beach’ aims to establish realistic valuations for the region and secure the developmental capital needed for sustainable growth,” Disu explained.

Disu also noted that while eco-tourism remains a key mission of ‘Riteonthebeach’, the focus on carbon accountability aligns with Lagos State’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality. Over the past three years, the ecological conservation project has removed about 30 tons of plastic bottles and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for recycling, creating jobs, scholarships, and training opportunities for over 1,000 youths in coastal communities.
