Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding the nation’s healthcare sector to provide accessible and quality care for all citizens. She made this statement during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the National Hospital Abuja (NHA) on Wednesday.

Addressing the gathering, Senator Tinubu highlighted the hospital’s critical role in the development of the country’s healthcare system.

“Every Nigerian deserves quality healthcare, regardless of their background or circumstances. The Federal Government, under the able leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is committed to rebuilding the healthcare system in Nigeria. The National Hospital Abuja remains pivotal in ensuring that all Nigerians have access to quality and affordable healthcare,” she said.

The First Lady urged the hospital’s management and staff to maintain resilience and strive for excellence, ensuring that the facility continues to positively impact lives.

Honoring the Legacy of Hajia Maryam Abacha

Senator Tinubu acknowledged the foresight of former First Lady Hajia Maryam Abacha, whose Family Support Programme (FSP) led to the establishment of the hospital in 1999. Originally conceived as a facility for women and children, its mandate was expanded to serve as Nigeria’s apex referral hospital, catering to all citizens.

“In honor of this legacy, the hospital’s Radiotherapy Centre will now be named the Mariam Abacha Radiotherapy Centre,” she announced during the event.

Commitment to Health Sector Reforms

The First Lady also commended the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Alli Pate, and the Chief Medical Director of NHA, Prof. Muhammad Raji, for their efforts in improving the health and well-being of Nigerians.

Prof. Pate, in his remarks, emphasized ongoing reforms in the health sector aimed at strengthening the system to provide better services in the near future.

Prof. Raji expressed optimism about the hospital’s trajectory, stating that it is on the verge of becoming a leading referral hub for Africa.

Symbolic Commissions and Activities

As part of the celebrations, Senator Tinubu commissioned the newly named Mariam Abacha Radiotherapy Centre and planted trees within the hospital premises, symbolizing hope and growth for the future of healthcare in Nigeria.

The anniversary marked a moment of reflection and rededication to the goals of quality healthcare delivery, setting the stage for further development of the nation’s health sector.
