Havilahgiyon College Holds Maiden Matriculation Ceremony, Commits to Tackling Unemployment through Skills Training…

Havilahgiyon College of Health, Vocational Studies, Fisheries and Horticulture on Thursday, June 12, 2025, held its first matriculation ceremony at its Vocational Skills Study Centre in Tunga Maje, Abuja. The event marked a key milestone in the college’s mission to provide employment-oriented education and empower Nigerian youth with practical skills.

The ceremony was described by college representatives as a “defining moment” for both the institution and its pioneer students, who have now formally commenced their academic journey in a range of skill-oriented programs. These programs include tailoring and fashion design, fish farming and aquaculture, horticulture and environmental management, and community health and related health programs.

The college was established to help close the growing gap in vocational and health education in the country by developing graduates who are equipped to become job creators instead of job seekers. “In a country grappling with youth unemployment, this kind of education has never been more urgent,” a spokesperson said during the ceremony.

Havilahgiyon College emphasizes a combination of academic instruction and hands-on training, offering state-of-the-art facilities and industry-seasoned lecturers who bring a strong entrepreneurial focus to their teaching. The aim is to produce graduates with skills that are directly relevant to the job market and to empower them to pursue their own enterprise initiatives upon graduation.

As the first cohort of students were formally matriculated, college authorities pledged their continued commitment to excellence and expansion. Plans are underway to establish innovation hubs and foster partnerships with industries to create an ecosystem that supports both education and enterprise.

The college also called on journalists and media organizations to help raise awareness about the value of vocational education and celebrate the dignity of skilled trades in strengthening the nation’s workforce.

“We are planting seeds today that will yield a harvest of economic empowerment, self-reliance, and national development.” the college stated in a closing message.
