The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Lagos Sector Command has launched its Ember Months awareness campaign for 2024, with a theme focused on enhancing road safety by addressing dangerous driving habits. The campaign, titled “SPEAK UP AGAINST DANGEROUS DRIVING: CRASHES KILL MORE PASSENGERS THAN DRIVERS,” aims to improve driver behavior and position Nigeria as a nation conscious of road safety.

The launch event, held at the Sector Command Headquarters in Ojodu, saw attendance from FRSC officers, Guinness Nigeria PLC staff, members of the NURTW, journalists, and various stakeholders.

In his address, Lagos Sector Commander CC Kehinde Hamzat highlighted the significant increase in travel during the Ember months due to family reunions, festivals, and ceremonies, which leads to heavy traffic and road accidents. He noted that reckless driving exacerbates these conditions, posing a serious threat to travelers.

To tackle these challenges, the FRSC has intensified its efforts to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce road accidents. The Corps Marshal has mandated a nationwide public enlightenment and sensitization campaign, alongside heightened enforcement measures.

The FRSC’s updated public education strategy now includes mega town hall meetings, motorcades, advocacy at transit points, rest areas, and loading bays. This approach aims to engage passengers actively and encourage them to speak up against reckless driving, as statistics show passengers are more often victims in traffic accidents.

Commander Hamzat stressed the importance of passengers understanding their rights and being proactive in ensuring their safety. He urged passengers to report reckless driving, use seatbelts, and support responsible driving behaviors.

Representing Guinness Nigeria, Mr. Rotimi Odusola reaffirmed the company’s long-standing partnership with the FRSC, emphasizing their commitment to promoting responsible alcohol consumption and supporting road safety initiatives. He highlighted the importance of not consuming alcohol while driving and the company’s internal efforts to uphold this message.

The FRSC’s campaign underscores the collective responsibility of ensuring road safety and calls on all stakeholders to collaborate in reducing road carnage. Motorists are reminded to maintain their vehicles, obey traffic laws, and make proactive choices to ensure a safer driving environment in Nigeria.
