In the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan and to spread support to the needy in the society, the Governor of Lagos state, Gov. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu empowered 300 widows and elderly women. This gesture was implemented by the women sociopolitical group, Sanwo-Olu Babes led by Mrs. Funmilayo Ayodele (aka. Bombay) within the premises of LAWMA in Sura, Lagos Island. The 300 widows got N10,000 cash gift and bags of rice, beans, and semovita to take home to support their families.

Speaking on the importance of the gesture, the MD/CEO, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr. Ibrahim Odunmboni shared: ‘This event is to support majority of our workforce who are widows and in the local communities to give them a form of empowerment to support themselves. We also give them vocational training that they can use to support their day-to-day living. It is a good and encompassing idea of empowerment for our widows across the state.’

‘The Governor is doing a fantastic job at ensuring that everybody is supported. Today we have well over 300 widows going home today not only with food but also skills that can help them earn extra income. We understand that the beneficiaries of this program is well spread including Muslims, Christians, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo’, Trek Africa Newspaper gathered.

The head of the state environmental agency, Odunmboni also used the opportunity to task Lagosians on an environmental friendly Lagos. He said: ‘It is a collective responsibility that we have as citizens that everyone do what they can do to make sure that Lagos prospers.’

Mrs. Funmilayo Ayodele, aka. Bombay addressing the women at the Empowerment event.

On the upcoming elections, he charged all Nigerians, ‘Go and collect your PVCs so that we can actualize our dreams. At least do something, vote. God will continue to hear our prayers.’

The leader of Sanwo-Olu babes who packaged the event, Oluwafunmilayo Ayodele aka. Bombay said: ‘The main aim of today is to support widows because we know they always troop out during elections to vote. So we thought of little things that they can do which led us to give them money and food because these older people, we can’t say they should come and be working.’

‘Now that we know that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is going for second term, we want to encourage him that he should do more. God Who has been helping him will continue to work with him’, she remarked.

Also present at the event today was Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s elder brother, Mr. Adebayo Sanwo-Olu who restated: ‘This event is to appreciate the widows that usually come out to vote for our party, APC. There are 300 widows empowered today, all 60 years and above with N10,000 each, bags of rice, beans, and semovita to cook at home. Last week, we reached out to the 57 local councils for Ramadan and Easter. This is a time to show love.’

About the Governor popularly called ‘Sellable of Lagos’, the elder brother said: ‘Everybody knows how he has performed. There is no LG/LCDA in Lagos that you won’t feel the impact of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. I can say that he has no issue, nobody is coming out against him in APC. We are waiting for the general elections.’

On what to expect hopefully when the Governor gets the 2nd term in 2023, ‘This 2nd term, he will do more. You know that the first term was rough with COVID-19, Endsars, and so on. He was the only Governor that went to President Buhari during the Endsars issue. We will enjoy him more this 2nd term’, Adebayo Sanwo-olu told Trek Africa Newspaper.

The Executive Director, LAWMA, Mr. Kunle Adeniyi commented: ‘This is one of those gestures to help people who are underprivileged so that they can know that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu is the man of the people. He should continue to do the good he is doing, he should continue to help people. This is a gathering to strengthen and drum support for the mandate given to Mr. Governor to go for 2nd term.’

Some of the beneficiaries of the support also spoke with Trek Africa Newspaper. Mrs. Funmilola Adediran said: ‘Today’s event is bringing peace. No matter what they have done today, it is something. Anybody that use this money to provide for his family will pray for the Governor, Bombay and everyone involved in this. N10,000 is something, anybody that steals N200 will be so beaten. I pray for Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu that he will win the second term.’

Another member of Sanwo-Olu babes, Alhaja Bisi Gawat who also benefited said: ‘Bombay has been doing something like this before in Bariga. Then she decided to bring it to Governor’s LGA. I pray that she will do more. All the widows here are thankful and pray for Governor Sanwo-olu. This second term will work for him.’

Yet another beneficiary, Mrs. Mary Akinwande added: ‘Today’s event by Bombay has brought pleasure to widows. May she continue to make headway. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu has shown us the light, Bombay has shown us the light, we say thank you to them. This second term by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu will be fruitful for all of us. He will not lose his life. Nigeria’s glory will shine.’
