NFIU CEO Condoles with Realnews Publisher Over Sister’s Death

By The People’s Voice Nigeria News

Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), has commiserated with Dr. Maureen Chigbo and her family over the tragic death of her elder sister, Barrister Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo, who was murdered on January 5, 2026, by unidentified kidnappers in Abuja.

Bakari led a team of senior NFIU officials to visit Maureen Chigbo in Abuja on Thursday, January 15, and expressed her condolences in a letter dated January 14. In the letter, she described Nwamaka’s “untimely death in the hands of kidnappers” as “profoundly unfortunate and deeply saddening.”

The letter read in part:

“We share in your grief and stand in solidarity with you during this difficult time. Please be assured that her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her, and that her professional and personal contributions will never be forgotten. On behalf of the NFIU, I pray that you and your family find strength and comfort in the cherished memories you hold of her. May the Almighty grant her eternal rest and grant you the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies.”

According to Realnews, Barrister Nwamaka, an Abuja-based lawyer and former treasurer of the Nigerian Bar Association (Abuja branch), was abducted on January 5 while on the phone with her sister Anthonia. During the call, kidnappers demanded a ransom of three million Naira and subsequently subjected Nwamaka to brutal violence. She was later found deceased at an Abuja specialist hospital with signs of torture.

The family engaged the Nigerian Police, including the FCT Police Commissioner and the Commander of the Scorpion Squad, to track the kidnappers, but tragically, Nwamaka did not survive. Police authorities have assured the family that the case remains under investigation.

Nwamaka was an active member of several professional and religious organisations, including the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA), Global Association of Female Lawyers (GAFA), and the National Association of Catholic Lawyers, Abuja. She was also vice president of the Holy Infant Jesus Society and a member of multiple Catholic confraternities.

The Chigbo family has thanked the police for their support and cooperation and urged that justice be served. They also expressed gratitude to friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their prayers and support. Funeral arrangements for Barrister Nwamaka will be announced in due course.
