According to the IGP, the Force and the Lagos State Government will work concurrently to modernize Police Barracks and other facilities in Lagos State in a bid to enhance the overall welfare of Police personnel serving in the state.
The disclosure was made by the IGP on Wednesday at the Ikeja headquarters of the Lagos Police Command. He stated that the barracks would be rebuilt and given to the original occupants.
The Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has identified 25 deteriorated police barracks across Lagos State that would be demolished.
IGP Alkali Baba, who was represented by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the Force started a series of awareness-raising and relocating initiatives for police officers residing in the affected barracks on Monday, May 1st, and Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
According to him, the news conference was part of the police’s effort to increase public awareness and was intended to foster open communication between other officers and the impacted residents.
According to Adejobi, the IGP has ordered that residents of the Barracks be given one- to two-month notice to leave their living quarters.
To fully accommodate all officially recognized and lawful residents of the impacted Barracks, this directive will not be implemented all at once but rather progressively and in phases.
“This laudable initiative by the Inspector General of Police is timely as it is without a doubt fundamental to addressing the longstanding issue of poor and dilapidated infrastructure within facilities occupied by Police personnel and is in furtherance of the IGP’s infrastructural development drives, which have so far led to the construction of over 198 projects, including more than 120 modern police stations, barracks, and other vital police buildings around the country, as part of efforts to ensure improved working conditions for more effective and efficient service delivery,” Adejobi stated.
“Therefore, it is our earnest hope that the IGP modernization plan will be successful and laudable, as it will not only maximize the potential of officers deployed within the Lagos State Police structure but will also add value to the state’s social, economic, and environmental profile,” he added.
DIG Rudolf Echebi Obe said during the briefing that the welfare of the police officers and men is very important to the police’s high ranking, and as a result, the Nigerian police force partnered with the Lagos state government to reconstruct the affected buildings that were already scheduled for demolition throughout the state.
To ensure that all affected infrastructure is rebuilt and returned to its rightful owner, we are taking the necessary steps. We’re utilizing this briefing to educate the public about the welfare reform the police are doing,” says Rudolf Echebi Obe.
According to Mrs. Toke Benson Awoyinka, the Lagos State Government’s Special Adviser on Housing, the state government approached the Nigerian Police Force about the poor condition of some Police Barracks that did not meet the structural integrity test. Going by the Lagos State Government’s recommendations, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has deemed it necessary to carry out the demolition, redevelopment, and reconstruction of 25 police barracks and facilities in Lagos State. But going by the new development, the government of Lagos State is collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force in the restructuring, redevelopment, and reconstruction of the debilitated barracks. And her ministry will facilitate all the plan work and the building approval and make sure the right thing is done.
As a state, we are passionate about the welfare of our security personnel, and we use this medium to call for the availability of social amenities for the police officers and their children and to face-lift the parade ground. Assuring the IGP that Gov. Babatunde Sanwo-Olu’s administration is part of the initiative
