The Nigerian government has confirmed the arrest of 10 individuals on INTERPOL’s watch list who were attempting to enter the country. The announcement was made by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, during the inauguration of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Technology Innovation Complex by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja on Tuesday.
Tunji-Ojo revealed that within the past week, these individuals, listed on both INTERPOL and Nigeria’s immigration wanted lists, were apprehended, potentially preventing acts of terrorism. He reassured that under the current administration, Nigeria remains a no-go zone for criminal elements.
The newly inaugurated facilities, including the NIS Data Centre, command and control centre, ECOWAS biometric card production centre, and a solar-powered plant, have significantly boosted the country’s ability to identify suspicious individuals and track irregular migration. The solar power plant, which saves the government over N300 million annually, powers the facilities, while 250 trained officers will provide 24/7 surveillance across the nation’s borders.
President Tinubu commended the new technology-driven security system, which has already led to the arrest of the 10 individuals. He emphasized that the system monitors high-risk passengers, detects suspicious travel patterns, and enhances border surveillance, making Nigeria one of the few African countries with an integrated passenger security system.
The Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) links all relevant government agencies and marks a major step in enhancing national security, with plans to achieve a 100% new passport regime by 2025.
