Remo Leaders Mobilize for State Creation Amid Calls for Equity and Recognition

The movement for the creation of Remo State is gaining unprecedented momentum as traditional rulers, political figures, and community leaders intensify their push for self-determination. In a bold step, Remo leaders have formally submitted a memorandum advocating for a new state from Ogun State, with Sagamu proposed as the capital

This demand is driven by Remo’s distinct ethnic identity, republican values, and a commitment to inclusive development. Advocates emphasize that Remoland is economically viable, boasting a strong industrial base, well-developed infrastructure, and proximity to Lagos, making it a strategic candidate for statehood.

Discussions on state creation in Ogun State have historically centred around an Ijebu-Remo State, but differing priorities led the Ijebu delegation to pursue a separate bid. In response, Remo leaders have now asserted their independent vision, making it clear that if Remo State cannot be actualized, they would rather remain in Ogun State than be merged into an arrangement that does not respect their unique identity.

Advocates of Remo State point to its solid industrial foundation, highlighting major corporations such as Nestlé Nigeria and Lafarge Cement, alongside the newly constructed Ogun State Agro-Cargo Airport. They argue that Remoland is well-positioned for economic growth, capable of standing independently without relying on external support.

During a press conference held at the palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland, Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East Senatorial District, commended the Remo leadership for taking decisive action. He urged both Remo and Ijebu leaders to embrace peaceful dialogue and find a compromise that benefits all parties.

Elder statesman Chief S.K. Onafowokan proposed a middle-ground solution, suggesting that Sagamu serve as the capital of a new Ijebu State while ensuring Remo’s autonomy is protected. He called for private negotiations between the Akarigbo of Remoland and the Awujale of Ijebuland, stressing that collaboration should outweigh division in determining the future of both regions.

The Remo Committee on State Creation reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and lawful advocacy, calling on Remo indigenes, both at home and abroad, to support the movement. Through stakeholder engagement, town hall meetings, and strategic lobbying, the campaign aims to raise awareness and secure broader support.

As the drive for Remo State intensifies, proponents remain firm in their vision for equity, recognition, and self-governance, whether as an independent state or a distinct entity within Ogun State.
