Transformative Innovation Under CSP Akerele as Taskforce Chairman

By Isaac Ajiboye

It was a typical summer day on June 26, 2024, when a new chapter began to unfold for the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Lagos State Taskforce, following the elevation and appointment of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Tayo Akerele as its Chairman.

Upon assuming office, the agency under Akerele’s leadership widely known simply as the Taskforce began to witness a unique blend of strategic thinking, collaborative partnerships, and the adoption of technological advancement in its operations. These efforts were carried out in strict compliance with the laws and regulations that established the Taskforce as a law enforcement agency.

CSP Akerele has built a strong reputation for discipline, integrity, professionalism, and efficiency. His experience has been shaped by participation in numerous conferences and seminars, both locally and internationally, where he gained exposure to modern policing methods and innovative approaches to maintaining law and order.

Even prior to his appointment as Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Akerele consistently emphasized the importance of modern policing through lectures and sensitization programs for officers. Under his stewardship, officers and enforcement personnel are regularly reminded to avoid the excessive use of force and to always operate within the law while discharging their duties, in order to maintain a healthy relationship between law enforcement agencies and the general public.

In keeping with this mandate and international best practices, many offenders apprehended by the Taskforce are duly prosecuted. While some have been convicted, others continue to have their day in court in full compliance with the rule of law.

In a related development, a few months after assuming office, CSP Akerele inaugurated a dedicated team tasked with implementing significant reforms within the agency. The reforms include redesigning the Taskforce’s operational structure to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

To further strengthen public engagement, the agency introduced emergency contact lines 09137555111 and 09138555111 through which members of the public can report complaints, give commendations, make observations, share opinions, or report the conduct of officers during routine patrols.

Operational Challenges

Taskforce officers often operate under difficult conditions, as some offenders believe they can evade justice through connections, influence, or perceived backing from powerful individuals. Despite these challenges, the agency continues to enforce the law with determination and professionalism.

As a strategic and seasoned police administrator, CSP Akerele’s track record speaks for itself wherever he has served. Numerous successes recorded under his leadership reflect his commitment to effective policing and operational excellence.

Through enhanced operational strategies and improved coordination, the Taskforce has played a significant role in curbing the activities of hoodlums and restoring order across parts of Lagos State. These achievements have further strengthened the agency’s reputation and positioned it in high esteem among residents.

Indeed, the progress recorded so far underscores the importance of capable leadership. With CSP Akerele at the helm, many observers believe the Lagos State Taskforce is in the hands of the right leader for the job.
