United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced plans to launch full banking operations in France, following a landmark business cooperation agreement. The agreement, signed with French Finance Minister Antoine Armand, took place during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to France.

In a statement, UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu, accompanied by President Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighted the significance of this agreement. Elumelu stated, “This partnership strengthens our commitment to offering seamless international banking services to our customers across the 11 Francophone African countries we serve, as well as to the broader African and European markets.”

Elumelu further noted that expanding into France is a natural progression for UBA, with Paris set to become the bank’s European Union hub. He added, “Paris will join our global network alongside London, New York, and Dubai, facilitating innovative financial solutions that bridge Africa and the world.”

With this agreement, UBA joins the ranks of Nigeria’s tier-1 banks with a presence in France.

President Tinubu’s two-day state visit, aimed at enhancing economic and diplomatic ties, marks the first official visit by a Nigerian leader to Paris in over two decades. President Macron greeted Tinubu warmly, emphasizing the cultural connection between the two nations, and even shared a message in Nigerian Pidgin English, stating, “Na big honour for France to welcome you for dis state visit.”
