NEW NARRATIVES FOR RIVERINE HEALTHCARE IN LAGOS WITH DR CREEK MEDICAL OUTREACH

It is no longer news that people of the riverine communities in Lagos State have earnestly been yearning for better healthcare services. Unfortunately, the peculiarity of the water massed area is that most healthcare professionals don’t always have the courage to transit the waterways to offer services. They also find it difficult to reside in these communities because of dearth of social amenities.

Dr Gbolahan Sodipo, who is well known as Dr Creek in the riverine communities of Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency have taken up the responsibility to provide quality healthcare services for these riverine communities. The story of this man is indeed an inspiring one because he had the best of comfort in life not just within the country but in the far away United Kingdom.

Dr Creek relocated his medical practice over Ten years ago to Igbologun, Snake Island. The motivation behind his action is primarily to save lives because he found out from his independent research that these communities were losing pregnant women to cruel clutches of death stemming firstly from Traditional Myth and lack of a comprehensive Healthcare Facility.

The Igbologun Medical Center was the vehicle to save lives from different kinds of ailments in the last Ten years. He has two branches of his hospital in two communities and they are; Igbologun and Manager. To further help the people of these communities, he recently came up with the initiative of Dr Creek Free Medical Treatments and Subsidized surgeries as a Corporate Social Responsibility.project. Through this medical outreach a good number of the people, particularly the very poor among them, accessed free medical treatments and surgeries.

For this maiden edition, he was able to mobilize Six Surgeons and the leading free surgeries advocate in Nigeria, Dr Oluwatosin Benjamin Olowojebubu to support the initiative. Dr Olowojebubu is the Executive Director of Benjamin Olowojebubu Foundation and the current Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association in Lagos State.

The following milestone were achieved through the medical outreach;

1. Free Medical Check up (Blood Pressure, Sugar Level, Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV & Hepatitis screenings) and Treatments for over Five Hundred (500) indigent people.
2. Fifteen (15) subsidized Surgeries (Fibroids & Appendicitis cases)
3. Forty Nine (49) free surgeries (Appendix, Hernias, Hydroceles, Lipomas, Breast Lumps etc).

According to Dr Creek, The target was One Thousand (1000) Free Medical Check up and Treatments, Fifty (50) subsidized surgeries and Fifty (50) free Surgeries. But limited funds impeded the team from attaining the set goals. It is also very pathetic that corporate organizations operating within these communities do not want to have Corporate Social Responsibility projects aimed at alleviating the healthcare needs of these very poor communities.

It is even worse that most Primary Healthcare Centers in these communities are not functioning optimally due to lack of manpower. It is time for the government to consider having a public private partnership for the effective management of these PHCs in the riverine communities. This partnership should be with medical practitioners who understand the peculiarities of the Riverine Healthcare Management System.

Dr Creek has also assured the people that his hospital has designed different healthcare programs that will impact them positively. The discounted surgeries will always come up on notable dates in the year. There will be Independence Discounted Surgeries coming up between 1st and 3rd October, 2022 at the IMC Medical Center at Sabokongi in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area.
