Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Moves To Change Name to Zenith Democratic Party (ZDP)

• Says its doors are still open to aspirants

The Zenith Labour Party has completed its plan to change the party name to Zenith Democratic Party (ZDP) ahead of the 2023 general election.

The hint was dropped by the party’s National Chairman, Bar Dan Nwanyanwu, at the end of a meeting with the state chairmen in Abuja.

Bar Nwanyanwu told news reporters after the two-hour meeting that the decision to change the Zenith Labour Party’s name was made to accommodate all shields of opinion and reputable politicians.

“Many politicians have approached me to join our party, but they are not comfortable with the word ‘Labour’ in our name because it connotes that the party is for the Nigerian Labour Congress or civil servants,” he said.

Bar Nwanyanwu, on the other hand, stated that while state chairmen have endorsed the new name, it must be formally ratified at the party’s National Convention.

It was not an easy task for the party to arrive at the Zenith Democratic Party because some state chairmen had a heated debate and many names were suggested such as Zenith Liberal Party, Zenith People’s Party, Zenith Progressive Party among others while some of them advocated that the name should be left as Zenith Labour Party has already gained acceptance among people in their states.

Bar Nwanyanwu also revealed that congresses had been held across the states, except in a few states where there was a minor crisis, which he said would be resolved before the party primaries began.

He also stated that the party’s primaries will begin on May 27th with state assembly and governorship candidates, and that the party’s flagbearer will be announced on June 1st of this year.As a result, he took advantage of the opportunity to urge youths, women, and people with disabilities to use the Zenith Labour Party’s free nomination form to run in the upcoming general elections in order to move the country forward.

For other aspirants who want to run on the party’s platform, he said the party is still selling forms and will be closed only 24 hours before its presidential primary on June 1st, 2022.
